Understanding Rotator Cuff Injuries

The shoulder is an elegant and complex piece of machinery. Its design allows us to reach and use our hands in many different positions.

The rotator cuff muscles and tendons help to keep your shoulder joint stable and functioning properly.

Tears in the rotator cuff can occur due to normal wear as we grow older, degeneration, or trauma leading to pain, weakness and impairment of the affected shoulder.  The good news is these injuries don't have to lead to surgery.  In fact, a
recent study from Finland asserts that when it comes to treatment of nontraumatic rotator cuff tears, physical therapy alone produces results equal to those produced by arthroscopic surgery and open surgical repair. According to the study's authors, follow-up of the 167 patients conclude that because physical therapy is non-invasive and effective, it should be the primary initial  treatment option.
